Geographical location
The island of Saint Martin is divided into 2 parts, Saint-Martin & Sint Maarten: 2 cultures and 2 very different governments with no borders.
The French side and the Dutch side, commonly called the French side and Dutch side
The area of 93 km2:
- northern area French side as an overseas collectivity since 1997 54 km2
- southern area Previously, Sint Maarten belonged to the former «Autonomous Country» of the Netherlands Antilles within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but became a Country within the same Kingdom on October 10, 2010, following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles.39 km2.
Saint-Martin French side is a very touristic island. Its capital, Marigot, is overlooked by Fort Saint-Louis built in 1776 to protect the island from English attacks
In St Martin, French and Dutch are spoken as well as English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
The nearest neighbouring islands are Anguilla and Saint Barthélemy, which rise from the same submarine plateau located at an average of -40 m.
There are about ten islets around the island, the largest of which is the very touristic Pinel with its three beaches. One must add the island Tintamarre located three kilometers from the coast.
The coastline of Saint Martin is cut into numerous bays bordered by some thirty white-sand beaches
The communication routes are by sea (Philipsburg commercial port) and by air with Princess Juliana International Airport on the Dutch side and the regional aerodrome of L’Espérance (at Grand Case) on the French side.
On the east coast, uninhabited islets (Tintamarre Island, Pinel Island) are surrounded by small fringing coral formations. The sandy bottoms are colonized by vast meadows of marine phanerogams. Whereas on Saint Barthélemy the mangrove belts are reduced to narrow relics, on Saint Martin they largely line the shores of the coastal lagoons (including Simpson Bay Lagoon, Étang aux Poissons, etc.) and some bays (Anse Margot, Oyster Pond, etc.)
History of Saint Martin
Christopher Columbus
The island was discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, who claimed it for Spain.
The Caribbean corsairs and buccaneers enslaved the island’s indigenous people, who were often taken from St Martin to work on neighboring islands.
In 1647, the Spanish, judging the island too small, abandoned it.
In 1648, the island was occupied by only four Frenchmen and five Dutchmen. They divided sovereignty of the island by the Treaty of Mount Agreements following a foot race:
A Dutch runner and a French runner each started from an end to meet. The Frenchman having covered a longer distance, the French zone was granted a larger area than the Dutch one (about 3/5 of the island).
It is said that the French runner, somewhat drunk, took shortcuts during his run…
And since 1648, the island has thus been divided between the Dutch and the French, the border between the two parts being merely administrative because a free movement agreement between the two zones was included in that 1648 convention.
The French part of the island became a lordship of the Knights of Malta from 1651 to 1665.
That same French part was then attached to St Kitts. The French and Dutch then had to face incessant English attacks which occupied the entire island from 1690 to 1699.
The island was then completely occupied by France until 1703 when the British occupied the French part. In the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), the Caribbean island of St Kitts was ceded by France to the United Kingdom.
The island of St Martin, then attached to St Kitts, remained isolated for many years, occupied by the English, before being attached by France to Guadeloupe in 1763 (D.O.M).
In a referendum in December 2003, the inhabitants of the island decided to give St Martin a new status as an overseas collectivity which took effect in 2007.
Detached from Guadeloupe, the island of Saint Martin, currently at the European level as an OCT, could migrate to an OMR
The island's economy was successively based on tobacco, indigo (the source of the indigo dye), sugarcane, cotton, salt, and livestock. And since the late 1960s, tourism, with duty-free shopping, has been the island's primary economic resource.
